CONCERTS and EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS
From the very beginning, our daily life at the Wychwood storefront was much occupied with our education initiatives—not just by giving lessons, but in the broadest possible sense.
During our tenure at Wychwood, we presented seven “Mainspace” concerts (in the covered street adjacent to the complex’s main market), a series of performances in the Wychwood art gallery, and held numerous more informal musical events in our own storefront.
With our 2011 concert series, in partnership with Theatre Direct, “Classical for KIDS,” we hoped to cultivate our relationship with neighborhood families. While with the informal talks held before all our concerts (as well as with the panel discussions held with our collaborators in creating multimedia events), we sought to reach a broader Toronto public.
To reach Toronto’s community of professional and aspiring musicians (as well as other Toronto artists) we created a series of mentorship workshops. These featured celebrated educators and authors, like Burton Kaplan, or composers and performers, like David Amran (whom we’ve long admired not only for his profound impact on the culture of contemporary classical musical, but equally for his remarkable gifts as a communicator). We also periodically held seminars on subjects of more purely practical interest to Toronto’s artistic community, like tax advice for creative professionals, or new strategies for recent university graduates to launch their careers.
