1000 Strings
In response to a commission from the INTERsection Festival to create a work suited to Toronto's downtown shopping district’s principal square, we collaborated with Canadian composer John Oswald—convincing him to revisit a seminal composition he’d written in 1990 for the Kronos Quartet.
As he originally conceived the work, “Spectre (for 1001 string quartet reflections),” the Quartet played live to multiple recorded overdubs of themselves. For our 2015 version, “#1000Strings,” we issued an open call to all of Toronto's string players, inviting them to fill Yonge-Dundas Square, and participate in a completely live performance of the work.
#1000Strings was remounted in Ottawa in 2019 in partnership with the Ottawa ChamberFest.
Winner of the Awesome Ottawa Award.
